Public’s views sought on a traffic-free Montague Street
Montague Street could be made a traffic-free zone - albeit only temporarily - under proposals contained in a Towards Zero Carbon Bute consultation.
Rothesay’s main shopping street could be closed to all vehicular traffic in a trial being suggested by a project set up to cut Bute’s carbon footprint.
Towards Zero Carbon Bute has launched a consultation asking for the public’s views on a traffic-free Montague Street - albeit only temporarily.
TZCB project manager Reeni Kennedy-Boyle said: “Our aspiration is to promote the town’s main shopping area as a social space for the whole community, and rather than campaigning for it to happen we want to say ‘let’s give it a try’.
“We want to know when people would support such a trial scheme - could it be over the Easter weekend, the Isle of Bute Jazz Festival or Bute Highland Games?
“We also want to know what kind of timing people would support. Would they be in favour of a whole weekend, or a 24-hour period, or a shortened day to allow for shop deliveries?
“Argyll and Bute Council has agreed that we can do a trial based on a temporary road traffic order, and are fairly supportive of the idea and of helping make it happen.
The temporary closure of Montague Street is one of three proposals contained in a new TZCB consultation document, available at TZCB’s premises in the town’s Castle Street, The Bike Shed in East Princes Street and Fyne Homes’ head office in Victoria Street.
The other ideas are allowing two-way cycling on all Rothesay’s one-way streets and creating a dedicated cycle path, complete with signage, from Port Bannatyne to Ascog, with the intention of eventually creating a safe cycling route all the way from Rhubodach at the north end of the island to Kilchattan Bay in the south.
