‘PlayTalkRead’ bus set for Rothesay stop
The ‘PlayTalkRead’ bus arrives on Bute later this week to encourage mums and dads to play, talk and read more often with their young children.
The bus pulls up at Rothesay Pavilion on Thursday, March 7 from 10am to 4pm - the first of nine stops at venues throughout Argyll and Bute.
The roadshow is a key part of the Scottish Government’s PlayTalkRead campaign (playtalkread.org) which focuses on the early years (0–3) of children’s lives.
Created in partnership with Working on Wheels, Scottish Book Trust, the Play@Home scheme and other voluntary organisations the colourful PlayTalkRead bus will offer tiny tots in Argyll and Bute free Bookbug, song, rhyme and story sessions.
Parents needn’t worry if they don’t know their ‘Humpty Dumpty’ from their ‘Wheels on the Bus’ – it’s a great opportunity to learn some new songs and share some old favourites! There will also be plenty of free creative play activities for parents to try out with their wee ones and lots of fun ideas to take home including items from the Scottish Governments ’30 Things to do Before You’re 3’ checklist which was launched last year.
Aileen Campbell MSP, the Scottish Government’s minister for children and young people, said: “It’s great to see the PlayTalkRead bus on the road again.
“The early years are key to our children’s future learning and development, so it’s essential we give them the best possible start.
“Just by playing, talking and reading with our little ones more often we can make a lasting impact on the rest of their lives.
“I hope that as many children and parents in Argyll and Bute as possible get on board and make the most of playing, talking and reading together on our fun and colourful bus.”
Research has shown that the first three years in a child’s life are crucial to their development, with 75 per cent of brain growth complete by age three.
Simply, by playing, talking and reading to tots more often, parents can help lay the foundations for their improved future life chances.
Anna Gibbons, early years programme manager for the Scottish Book Trust, said: “Scottish Book Trust is very proud that our Bookbug Sessions are featured on the PlayTalkRead bus, as they really capture the spirit of the PlayTalkRead campaign – playing, talking and reading with young children – and they are also great fun for children and parents.”
The national ‘PlayTalkRead’ campaign is aimed at helping parents stimulate their children from day one through free or low-cost, fun activities. The initiative is designed to help parents create strong foundations to improve their children’s future life chances.
Following its success last year, the PlayTalkRead DVD offering advice, interactive games and digital books will again be available for parents and carers to take away, free from each roadshow.
