Permission sought for Bute woodland planting
Kilbride Hill, in the background of this picture behind Lower Ettrick farm, is the subject of an application from the Forestry Commission to plant nearly 136 acres of native broad-leaved woodland.
The Forestry Commission’s Perth and Argyll Conservancy has applied for planning permission to plant nearly 55 hectares of mostly native woodlands at the north end of Bute.
The organisation wants to plant 54.97 hectares - or 135.83 acres - of mixed broadleaf trees on Kilbride Hill, on the east side of Glen More, north of Ettrick Bay.
Three quarters of the proposed plantation will comprise native broad-leaved trees - 41 per cent birch, 40 per cent rowan, ten per cent alder, three per cent oak, three per cent cherry, two per cent hazel and one per cent willow.
The rest of the site will be left as open ground.
The Kilbride Hill application comes in the same week as the Bute Estate announced plans for 25.86 hectares (63.9 acres) of broad-leaved woodland in fields behind Port Bannatyne - plans which have led to some concern over a loss of light to houses in the village’s Bannatyne Mains Road.
