MOST grandparents would say they’re very proud of their grandchildren, but Rothesay grandmother Edith has one very special reason to feel that way - because her granddaughter, Hannah Powell, is a weightlifter who will be taking part in the 2012 Olympics.
Hannah (18), who visits Edith on the island whenever she can and is currently training in Leeds, set new British records at both junior and under-23 level in the 48kg class at the Eleiko International Women’s Grand Prix in Austria in June, with a snatch of 60kg and a clean and jerk of 78kg for a 138kg total.
Her friends and family call her their ‘little power mouse’, as she stands at only four feet nine inches tall, but shows a tremendous amount of strength for her size.
Edith told us: “She’s been travelling all over the world, and is actually just back from Hungary a few weeks ago where she was very successful.
“I just can’t get over the thought that she’s heading to the Olympics. Hannah’s worked so hard for it; she’s been doing weightlifting since the age of 11.
“She passed her exams to do coaching, and in the future she might go on to pass down her knowledge to others.
“We’re all just so, so proud of her.”
