A new summer house at Calum’s Cabin near St Ninian’s Bay has been officially opened.

Taggart star Blythe Duff, who has a holiday home on Bute, performed the official opening at the holiday home on the island’s west coast.

The home was built to provide respite holidays for families with seriously ill children, in accordance with the wishes of Calum Speirs, who died in 2007 at the age of 12 after a year-long battle with a brain tumour.

The summer house was built with the help of the Wooden Spoon charity, whose development director Brian Hodges said: “Wooden Spoon is the charity of British rugby, which raises money through the rugby community across the British Isles to support capital projects for disadvantaged children.

“The charity was established in 1983, and since then we have donated more than £18 million to more than five hundred projects across Britain.”

Also present at the opening ceremony was Jamie Livingstone, a former rugby player who now chairs the charity’s Glasgow fund-raising committee.

Jamie said: “A large number of charities apply to Wooden Spoon for financial help, all of them worthwhile and deserving of support.

“We want to support ‘bricks and mortar’ – that is, capital projects that will stand the test of time.

“I’ve only been to Bute once before – I played rugby for the Co-optimists against Bute RFC in 2001 and I broke my ribs, so I’m delighted to be back for a happier occasion – and we’re absolutely delighted to be able to help Calum’s Cabin.”

Among those present at Friday’s ceremony was Kevin Blick, who raised more than £11,000 for Calum’s Cabin by swimming across the English Channel last month, and was on Bute to pay a visit to his parents, Clive and Juliet, who live in Rothesay.
