MPs criticised over Rothesay launch of power report
The launch of a report by MPs into the state of the power grid in Scotland following severe storms at the start of this year has been criticised by Bute councillor and Argyll and Bute provost Isobel Strong.
The report by the House of Commons’ Scottish affairs committee into the aftermath of the January 3 storm, which left Bute without power for the best part of three days, was launched at Rothesay Pavilion on Monday, August 27.
But the launch event was only made public the preceding Friday - and despite our attempts to spread the word online, the only person present to hear Argyll and Bute MP Alan Reid and committee chair Ian Davidson talk to the document three days later was The Buteman’s reporter.
Councillor Strong, in a letter to this week’s issue of The Buteman, said: “No councillors or community councillors were invited to attend, which makes me wonder why the two MPs came all the way to Rothesay and did not meet any of the island’s people apart from The Buteman reporter.”
Mr Reid responded: “The council submitted evidence to the inquiry and so were invited to attend. I’m sorry they didn’t send a representative.
“However, the committee needs to improve their procedures. The press release advertising the meeting was sent out far too late. I will be raising this at the next meeting of the committee.”
