Local college appoints new principal

A senior director at Adam Smith College in Fife has been appointed as the new principal of Argyll College UHI.

Fraser Durie, currently director of educational development and executive director for business, computing and community development at the third largest college in Scotland, will take up the post in September.

He succeeds the retiring Michael Breslin, who was elected as an SNP member of Argyll and Bute Council in May and was then appointed as the authority’s lead councillor for education and lifelong learning.

Andrew Campbell, chair of Argyll College UHI, said: “Fraser brings with him not only a wealth of experience of working in both further and higher education but also, importantly, of working collaboratively with other colleges and universities.

“We will continue to expand our portfolio of courses throughout the year, delivering additional courses in new areas - including engineering - as well as expanding the opportunities for our students in higher education as one of the 13 colleges and research institutions that make up the University of the Highlands and Islands.”

Mr Durie, who has already visited some of the college’s 13 centres throughout Argyll and the islands, said: “Staff form the heart of any college and it is our responsibility, regardless of job title, to ensure the delivery of the appropriate education for learners.

“Colleges serve their communities better when there are strong and positive connections with all external partners. Having previously developed effective partnerships - many of which have opened up new and exciting opportunities for learners - I know how valuable they are. My challenge will be to take on and build up the college’s existing linkages.”

Argyll College UHI has learning centres in Rothesay, Lamlash on Arran, Cairndow, Campbeltown, Craignish, Dunoon, Fionnphort and Tobermory on Mull, Bowmore on Islay, Lochgilphead, Oban and Crossapol on Tiree.
