Local answers to social work emergency calls in Argyll and Bute

Emergency out-of-hours calls for social workers in Argyll and Bute will be answered locally for the first time when a new service begins on April 1.

The new Social Work Emergency Service (SWES) will be the first point of contact with on-call social work staff for police, health care staff and other professionals and will provide essential cover in situations where children or adults may require protection or emergency intervention.

The service will be administered by Carr-Gomm, on behalf of Argyll and Bute Council, and replaces the existing call-handling service which has been based in Glasgow. The arrangement is a partnership between the council and Carr Gomm, which already provides a home-care overnight response service in Argyll and Bute.

Lead Councillor for adult services, Anne Horn, said: “This is good news for the quality of services in Argyll. For the first time, social work emergency calls will be received by a dedicated team based in Argyll.

“Staff answering the phones will have a better knowledge of the area, and will be able to work more closely with the local social work teams.”

The service will be supported by on-call professional staff from both Carr Gomm and Argyll and Bute Council. The new numbers for SWES calls are 01631 566491 (main number) and 01631 569712 (second number).
