Jim ‘dumbfounded’ at honours medal

ROTHESAY resident Jim Ross was “dumbfounded” to learn he had been awarded a British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday honours list.

Jim, 74, was recognised “for services to amateur football in Argyll and Bute” - although it was his efforts on Bute in particular that have caught the eye of the awarding authorities.

Born and brought up in the north of Glasgow, Jim’s professional career included spells with Ayr United and Partick Thistle.

After he retired from playing Jim and his wife Margaret moved to Bute, where Jim and his friend Andy Kelly set up a football coaching clinic based at the Moat Centre in Rothesay in 1982.

Jim, who retired from coaching in 2011, said: “I was dumbfounded - absolutely gobsmacked. I didn’t even know until I opened up the paper on Saturday morning - Margaret had somehow managed to keep it a secret.

“I just want to say a big thank you to all the people on Bute who have supported me over the years.”

Among those who began their footballing career under Jim’s tutelage are current Hamilton Accies midfielder Jim McAlister, and Scotland women’s international Jane Ross, who won her 37th Scotland cap on Saturday against Israel at Tynecastle.

* More on Jim’s award in this week’s issue of The Buteman - on sale from Thursday, June 21.
