The Scottish Government will implement a ‘prospectus for the islands’ in the event of a Yes vote in this September’s referendum.

Local government and planning minister Derek Mackay MSP made the commitment during a visit to Bute on Tuesday.

Mr Mackay spoke to The Buteman after holding talks with members of an Argyll and Bute Council working group on island issues at Eaglesham House in Rothesay.

“What we are proposing,” Mr Mackay said, “is not one set of plans for all the islands, but a ‘toolbox’ that communities can draw on that is right for their island’s circumstances.

“I’m very sensitive to the fact that our islands are all different, but I believe their voice must be heard.”

The detail of the prospectus is expected to be made public in mid-June.
