Highland MSPs champion under-threat bug species

Three Highlands and Islands regional MSPs are among a group of Scottish parliamentarians who have agreed to champion under-threat species of bugs.

The charity Scottish Environment LINK asked MSPs to show their commitment to protecting and conserving wildlife by choosing from a shortlist of 93 threatened species suggested by wildilfe organisations.

One of those groups, Buglife Scotland, suggested a number of threatened invertebrates, including the freshwater pearl mussel and the narrow-headed ant.

The mussel’s ‘champion’ is Conservative Highlands and Islands MSP Mary Scanlon, while Mrs Scanlon’s party colleague and fellow Highlands representative Jamie McGrigor is championing the narrow-headed ant.

Labour’s David Stewart, meanwhile, is the champion of the great yellow bumblebee.

Other under-threat bug species being championed by MSPs from elsewhere include the bog sun-jumper spider, the pond mud snail and the tadpole shrimp.

Craig Macadam, Buglife Scotland director said “This is a fantastic opportunity for MSPs to show their commitment to protecting and conserving wildlife.

“Becoming a species champion will help raise the profile of these endangered species. Buglife is delighted that six MSPs have already selected invertebrates to champion.”
