Growing frustration of Bute fishery owner

Loch Fad has been closed to anglers since August 2013 following an outbreak of the Argulus foliaceus louse, which does not harm humans but is poisonous to fish.

The owner of Loch Fad Fisheries has told The Buteman of his growing frustration as he waits for the green light to re-open to local and visiting anglers.

Jimmy Poole said he had applied earlier this month to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) for permission to discharge a product into the water which he hopes will deal with the outbreak of freshwater lice which forced the loch’s closure last summer.

“Unfortunately because nobody has tried this before in still waters, SEPA are unsure of the discharge implications,” Mr Poole said, “and so it could take a month to get their permission.

“The waiting is getting frustrating. I just wish they’d give me a yes or a no.”
