Staff at Rothesay’s JobCentre Plus said farewell to their colleague Gordon Shaw on Friday as he reached the end of a 43-year career in the civil service.

Gordon, whose first post with what was then the Benefits Agency was a three-month casual position in Paisley between March and June 1971, has since worked in Glasgow and Greenock as well as having two spells on home soil in Rothesay, from 1975-78 and then from 1999 until retirement.

Gordon has actually been semi-retired since he reached his 60th birthday in 2009, but has continued to work for two days each week in the JobCentre Plus office in King Street since then.

“I’ve been fortunate to work with some wonderful colleagues,” Gordon said on Friday. “Being part of a small team means you have to support each other - that’s how you meet your targets, and it is something which has always been important to us.”
