Two Rothesay Academy pupils have seen their hopes of taking part in an educational visit to the Auschwitz concentration camps next month given a boost by a donation from a local thrift shop.
Laura Sprowl and Katie Calderwood hope to travel to the camps, established by the Nazis on occupied Polish soil, with the Holocaust Educational Trust - and a donation from For Bute has got them to the halfway mark in their bid to raise the £600 they need to fund the trip.
The £300 donation was presented at For Bute’s shop in Rothesay’s Victoria Street this week.
Rothesay Joint Campus applies each year to the Trust for places on its Lessons from Auschwitz programme, designed to help today’s young people understand the events of the Holocaust.
Should they raise enough money to cover the expenses of the trip, Laura and Katie will visit both the Auschwitz and Auschwitz-Birkenau camps, and will also take part in a seminar giving them the chance to meet Holocaust survivors, a conference to talk about their experience, and a project in which they will spread the message of the programme to the wider community.
