Fraudsters steal £99 from victim in bogus call scam

A woman in the Cowal and Bute area has lost £99 in an elaborate bogus call scam.

The woman was defrauded of £99 after receiving a telephone call from a female claiming to be from The Ministry of Justice. The caller stated the victim was due approximately £3300 from a payment protection insurance payout.

The caller then told the victim she had to first make a payment of £99 before any transaction could take place. This was to take the form of a UKASH voucher and a representative would personally call at the home address to collect the voucher. The victim thereafter purchased a UKASH voucher locally for £99.

A subsequent call from the same female then stated the amount to be paid in advance was now £400.99 before the victim could receive the £3300 and again the transaction was to take the form of a UKASH voucher. However the victim refused to proceed any further due to suspicions about the process. Once the voucher is bought then the crime is complete.

There have been several similar bogus calls incidents nationwide which relate to payments using UKASH vouchers. Members of the public are advised to ensure any such requests are genuine and to be vigilant if approached about similar ventures.

Police are appealing to members of the public for any information which may help them to track down the fraudsters behind the scam.

Inspector Anderson of Rothesay Police office stated: “If anyone has any information which can help with this particular inquiry I would ask them to contact Dunoon Police Office on 01369 763000 or Rothesay Police Office on 01700 894000,

“Alternatively CRIMESTOPPERS can be contacted on 0800 555 111, if you wish to remain anonymous.”
