Dunoon result completes Argyll & Bute Council picture

INDEPENDENTS Dick Walsh and Jimmy McQueen and the SNP’s Michael Breslin have been elected as representatives for the Dunoon ward on Argyll and Bute Council.

The result was declared shortly after 11.30pm on Thursday at the Queen’s Hall in Dunoon by returning officer and council chief executive Sally Loudon.

Cllr Walsh received 777 first preference votes, while Cllr Breslin was elected to the council for the first time after receiving 663 first preferences. Councillor McQueen received 432.

The Dunoon ward contest was postponed for seven days following the death of SNP councillor and candidate Alister McAlister shortly after nominations closed.

Thursday’s result means the coalition of SNP and independent councillors which looks set to run the authority now has 21 members, against a 15-strong opposition of independents, Liberal Democrats and Conservatives.
