Argyll and Bute Council is proposing to change the way its secondary head teachers are questioned about their school's exam results.
Argyll and Bute Council wants to change the way its schools’ exam results are discussed – in a way that means head teachers will no longer be questioned on the subject in public by elected councillors.
At present, secondary head teachers give annual reports at a regular public meeting of the relevant local area committee, outlining their school’s achievements and exam results for the year, before answering questions from the councillors present.
But a report to go before the first full council meeting of the year this Thursday recommends that in future, a separate meeting should be arranged for each school at which elected councillors and senior staff can discuss exam results in more detail.
The report states: “The inclusion of this item on the busy area committee agenda can mean the depth of discussion and analysis is more limited than would be preferred.
“It is recommended that the council agrees that in future the report to the area committees by the head teachers or their representatives be centred around achievement with the inclusion of a general statement about examination results.”
A council spokesperson told The Buteman the meetings between councillors and senior staff would not be held in public.
“Those meetings themselves would be closed,” we were told, “but there will still be reports to the area committees, and there is no indication that that element of the process would be held in private.”
