Doc looks back at Bute cliff rescue drama

A doctor who spent three hours with his wife trapped half way up a cliff at the south end of Bute has spoken to The Buteman about the couple’s terrifying experience.

Police, fire and ambulance personnel, along with the Bute coastguard rescue team and the Largs RNLI inshore lifeboat all helped rescue Martin and Wendy Heath, who raised the alarm shortly after 7pm on New Year’s Day.

“We decided to go for a circular walk along the West Island Way from the car park at the south end of Kilchattan Bay,” Mr Heath, a locum doctor on the island, told The Buteman.

“We had maps, warm drinks and all the right clothing, and thought it would be quite straightforward, but two things happened - firstly all the rain had made walking extremely difficult between Kilchattan Bay and Glencallum Bay, and then after we passed St Blane’s Chapel we couldn’t see any signs for the West Island Way at all.”

* To read Mr Heath’s account of the drama in full, make sure you pick up your copy of the new issue of The Buteman - on sale from Thursday, January 10.
