Demolition looks like it’s the only option left for a former Rothesay church, according to one of Bute’s councillors.

An exclusion zone was set up around the former West Church building in Argyle Street late last year after an inspection found that the roof had begun to sag following the partial failure of one of the main roof beams.

Councillor Robert Macintyre told The Buteman this week that Argyll and Bute Council had issued tender documents for the partial demolition of the building.

“The council now believes there is no option for the protection of the public other than the partial demolition of the church.

“To ensure we get the best possible value for the work which needs to be done the council has issued tender documents for demolition to various contractors who have experience in this type of work.”
