Debate over Rothesay garden space plans

The planned redevelopment of a garden space in the centre of Rothesay sparked a heated debate at Bute Community Council this week.

The community council gave its backing earlier this year to a proposal to spend £100,000, set aside in Argyll and Bute Council’s 2012-13 capital budget for roads and amenity services projects on the island, on revamping the gardens on the corner of High Street and Montague Street.

But Nicola Jones, who was elected as a community councillor earlier this month, complained that BCC had not done enough to involve the public in drawing up plans for the space.

Ms Jones, who is also Argyll and Bute’s voluntary arts ambassador and an artist herself, said: “As an artist I would like to help design my community. You are going to design a bit of our town. What if it doesn’t look good? What if the community doesn’t like it?”

Donnie MacLeod, who leads the BCC sub-committee which sought public suggestions for ways of spending the £100,000, said three tenders had been received for the work, and pledged that once the winner had been chosen the plans would be brought before BCC for consideration.
