Court round-up: woman fined for ferry assault on boy
A WOMAN who admitted assaulting a child while on board the ferry crossing from Rothesay to Wemyss Bay was fined £180 at the town’s sheriff court this week.
Elizabeth Connolly (40), address given as 4C Dewar Avenue, Rothesay, committed the offence on April 7 after a verbal altercation with a group of boys who had been throwing sweets at one another, one of which had struck the accused.
* Also at Rothesay Sheriff Court this week, a man who pleaded guilty to making sectarian and homophobic remarks to police officers on two separate occasions was given a community payback order.
Forty-three year-old Paul Connelly, whose address was given as 8 Columshill Place, committed the first offence at Rothesay police station after being arrested on a separate matter on January 7; he behaved in a similar manner after being arrested in connection with a further separate incident on March 11.
Connelly’s solicitor told the court her client’s psychiatric history had contributed to his behaviour on both occasions, but that didn’t prevent him being given a supervised 18-month CPO, with a progress report in four months.
* John Rippie (32), address given as Flat 3/1, 34 Montague Street, was fined £450 for assaulting another man in the Grapes Bar in the town on November 13 last year.
* Stuart Ogilvie (27), address given as Flat 3/1, 11 Albert Place, Rothesay, was told to undertake 50 hours of unpaid work after pleading guilty to failing to pay a fine of £135 for a separate offence committed in September 2012.
* Sean Devlin (25), address given as 21 Westlands Road, was fined £66 - reduced from £100 - after failing to pay a fixed penalty ticket issued for defects with the vehicle he was driving.
Devlin’s vehicle had been stopped by police in High Street, Rothesay on March 28.
