Court: Rothesay sheriff hits out at social workers

Social workers from the mainland were criticised for failing to explain the non-appearance of a background report on a Rothesay man at the town’s sheriff court on Monday.

Background reports had been ordered from Renfrewshire Council at a previous appearance by 20-year-old Sean Reilly, but when he returned to the dock on Monday, Sheriff Ruth Anderson was told the requested information was still not available – and there was no explanation for its non-appearance.

“They don’t even have the courtesy to communicate,” the sheriff lamented.

In addition to the charges already admitted and on which the reports were ordered, Reilly, whose address was given as Flat 1/1, 1 Russell Street, pleaded guilty on Monday to a charge of throwing a glass tumbler at the living room window of another flat in Russell Street on October 26.

Sentence was deferred for seven days to allow all Reilly’s cases to be dealt with together.

* Barry Russell (41), of Flat 0/1, 8 Columshill Place, Rothesay, pleaded guilty to his part in two separate incidents in the town in which vehicles were damaged.

Russell admitted behaving in a disorderly manner, shouting, swearing, obstructing the passage of vehicles, repeatedly striking a vehicle and attempting to engage the public in a fight in Barone Road on August 21, and damaging a parked car in the town’s King Street on October 1 by repeatedly punching it.

Sentence was deferred for background reports.

* More on these cases in this week’s issue of The Buteman - on sale from Thursday, February 7.
