Court: Rothesay man jailed for disorder offences

A Rothesay man was jailed for six months at the town’s sheriff court on Monday for two counts of abusive and threatening behaviour and one of destroying or damaging property.

Barry Russell (41), whose address was given as Ground Floor, 17 Store Lane, had previously pleaded guilty to committing the three offences in a five-week period between August and October last year.

The first offence took place in Barone Road on August 21, when he stood in the roadway, obstructed the passage of vehicles, shouted, swore, repeatedly struck a vehicle with his hand and tried to engage members of the public in a fight.

Four days later Russell shouted, swore, kicked a door and uttered threats of violence at a flat in Columshill Place and within a marked police vehicle.

Then, on October 1, he repeatedly punched a car in King Street, causing damage to the vehicle.

Russell’s solicitor Jim Hannay suggested that sentence could be deferred to await the outcome of his client’s alleged breach of a community payback order, but Sheriff Ruth Anderson said she saw “no viable alternative” to custody and jailed the accused for two months on each complaint, with the terms to be served consecutively.
