A MAN who was found in possession of an offensive weapon after an assault on his then-partner was jailed for 35 weeks when he appeared at Rothesay Sheriff Court this week.
William O’Neill (44), address given as c/o HM Prison Greenock, was seen by three witnesses chasing a woman along Castle Street in Port Bannatyne on June 6, dragging her along the ground and kicking her on the body; some time later, O’Neill was seen walking back towards the complainer, in the street, with a black-handled kitchen knife.
Alison Montgomery, defending, said O’Neill’s relationship with the woman had been “a destructive one”, and that it was now over and he had no intention of returning to Rothesay.
Sheriff Ian Anderson gave O’Neill a 35-week sentence for possession of an offensive weapon, and concurrent 15-week jail terms for assaulting the woman and behaving in an abusive manner towards police.
* Paul McNeill (32), whose address was given as The Bothy, Forrest Road, Colgate, West Sussex, was given a community payback order of 45 hours’ unpaid work at Rothesay Sheriff Court this week after admitting being in possession of a baseball bat in the town’s Auchnacloich Road on June 3.
* Rothesay resident Cyril Thompson was also given a community payback order, and a two-year offender supervision order, after admitting sending grossly offensive voicemail messages to his former partner.
Thompson (54), address given as Flat 1/1, 4 Deanhood Place, left the messages at around 3.30am on April 28.
* There was better news for another Rothesay resident, 31-year-old Andrina Lewis, who was found not guilty of assaulting a neighbour with a six-pint milk carton in the town’s Longhill Terrace on February 21 after getting involved in an argument.
Sheriff Anderson said that in view of the huge discrepancies between the versions of events given by the complainer and Crown witnesses on one hand, and by the accused and defence witnesses on the other, there was insufficient evidence to convict Lewis of the charge.
