Court: community order for painter’s drunken outburst

A ROTHESAY painter and decorator spat at and tried to punch a police officer after being arrested for a breach of the peace in the town on Sunday night, the town’s sheriff court heard this week.

David Wilson (43), whose address was given as Flat 2/2, 1 Bridgend Street, pleaded guilty to committing a breach of the peace by shouting, swearing and uttering threats of violence; of assaulting a police officer by attempting to punch him on the head; of assaulting the same police officer by spitting on his head and body; and of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner, likely to cause a reasonable person to suffer fear and alarm.

The offences were committed outside an address in High Street and at the town’s police office on the evening of August 26.

Jim Hannay, defending, said Wilson - who was given a 100-hour community payback order - was “extremely sorry” for his actions.

* Barry Russell (40), whose address was given as c/o 8 Columshill Place, pleaded guilty on Monday to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner, likely to cause a reasonable person fear and alarm at a second floor flat elsewhere in Columshill Place and within a marked police vehicle by shouting, swearing, repeatedly kicking a door and uttering threats of violence.

Russell was arrested after an incident at the property on Saturday evening; sentence was deferred for background reports, including an update on the progress of a previous community payback order given to Russell for a separate offence.

* More detail on these stories in the new issue of The Buteman - on sale from Thursday, August 23.
