Couple rescued in Kilchattan Bay cliff drama

Bute’s coastguard team came to the rescue of a man and woman who were trapped on a cliff near Kilchattan Bay at the south end of the island on New Year’s Day.

Emergency services were called at around 7pm after the woman fell approximately 20 feet down the cliff and her male companion got stuck trying to help her.

The couple were located by Strathclyde Fire and Rescue personnel at the scene before the members of the Bute coastguard team arrived to co-ordinate the rescue, while police and ambulance crews and the Largs RNLI inshore lifeboat also attended.

The island’s coastguard team leader Gordon McMurchie said: “We were called to a report of two people stranded on a cliff, and by the time we arrived the fire brigade had located them.

“We had to walk round the side of the cliff to get to them and start the rescue - we couldn’t get to them from the bottom of the cliff.

“They were off the cliff by about half past nine, and were transported to the lifeboat, which took them to a waiting ambulance.

“The woman was pretty shaken up but they weren’t injured, and they were able to go home after being checked over in the ambulance.”
