Consultation on Argyll & Bute development plan

Members of the public can have their say on the contents of the proposed Argyll and Bute Local Development Plan at a series of consultation events next month.

The focus of the plan is on creating new jobs and investment opportunities, new homes for people to live in and the neccessary infrastructure such as roads and superfast broadband to make this happen.

The plan sets out Argyll and Bute Council’s vision of how the area’s land will be used over the next ten years in response to challenges such as population loss and climate change.

Councillor Sandy Taylor, chair of the authority’s planning, protective services and licensing (PPSL) committee, said: “The proposed Local Development Plan includes a vision, key aims and policy responses which are designed to address the challenges the communities of Argyll and Bute will face in the years ahead.

“These include meeting all of our housing needs, reducing the need to travel, creating new job opportunities, retaining our essential services and looking after our outstanding natural and built environment and delivering the many development opportunities contained within the plan.

“Only by having a successful economy can we grow our working population and keep and enhance the essential services and infrastructure we all need to maintain our quality of life. A series of open days have been arranged across Argyll and Bute and I would encourage as many people as possible to go along, speak to our planning team, have a look at the LDP and make their views known.”

The Bute consultation event takes place at Rothesay Pavilion on Monday, February 26 from 3pm to 7.15pm.

The full list of consultation dates and venues is as follows (all except Rothesay run from 3pm to 8pm): Cardross (Geilston Hall) February 18; Lochgilphead (Community Centre) February 19; Oban (Corran Halls) February 20; Dunoon (Queen’s Hall) February 20); Campbeltown (Victoria Hall) February 21; Helensburgh (Victoria Halls) February 25; Rothesay (Pavilion) February 26; Tobermory (Taigh Solais) February 28; Bowmore (Service Point) February 28.

From Monday, February 4, you can take part in the consultation in a number of ways - online at www.argyll-bute.gov.uk/ldp or by downloading the form and emailing it to ldp@argyll-bute.gov.uk.

You can also post the form back to the council at Development Policy Team, Manse Brae, Lochgilphead, PA31 8RD, or you can fax the form back to 01546 604678.

The proposed LDP has been developed after extensive consultation with more than a thousand stakeholders over several years, including community councils, developers, land owners, private individuals and key agencies including Scottish Natural Heritage, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, Historic Scotland and Scottish Water.

Following the consultation period any necessary changes will be made to the plan before being approved by the council and sent on to Scottish Ministers. Once the LDP has been examined by a reporter appointed by the Scottish Government to address any unresolved objections, the LDP will be published with any required modifications and then adopted by Argyll and Bute Council as its land use policy document in its role as planning authority.
