Concern over Rothesay town centre ‘drinking den’

The state of this empty site at Queen Street in Rothesay came in for criticism at Bute Community Council this week.

The decrepit state of a vacant site in Rothesay town centre was criticised at Bute Community Council this week.

The site in Queen Street has lain empty for several years since the demolition of a long-derelict tenement block and is currently occupied by two large containers bearing the logo of Shanks Waste Solutions.

But community councillor Iain Gillespie told BCC’s February meeting that he had concerns the area was being used as a drinking den.

“I’ll often pick up some of the cans that have been left there,” Mr Gillespie said, “and a lot of them are booze cans.”

Inspector Gordon Anderson from Strathclyde Police asked what kind of drinks cans Mr Gillespie had found, in a bid to find out the likely age range of anyone using the site in such a fashion, and said his officers would pay extra attention to the site in future.

BCC member Mike Blair suggested the area would make a “brilliant” car park for shoppers using nearby Montague Street.
