PORT Bannatyne marked the Queen’s diamond jubilee in style with a community street party on Sunday afternoon.

Organised by the parent council at nearby North Bute Primary School, the event, held in Castle Street in the centre of the village, featured entertainment from past and present pupils of the school as well as a variety of stalls set up to raise funds for the school and other community groups.

Meanwhile, across the water in Colintraive, the party spirit was much in evidence on Sunday at one of a series of ‘Big Lunch’ events taking place in communities across the UK in conjunction with the Eden Project.

Children from the Colintraive and Glendaruel area took part in a ‘kings and queens’ parade before a slave auction in which more than 20 local residents offered a range of talents and services, from eight hours with a strimmer to a pot of soup for up to 12 people.

Back on Bute, the jubilee celebrations continue on Monday with parties and lunches at homes and businesses around the island; there’s also a day of family activities at Mount Stuart, culminating in the lighting of a beacon on the lawn in front of the house at 10pm.
