Community groups help fund speech aid device

TWO local benefactors have helped contribute towards the cost of a communication aid for a Bute resident left unable to speak because of the effects of a stroke.

Rothesay resident Dan Edgar handed over a cheque for £500 on behalf of the Argyll and Bute Trust, which he chairs, to Bute speech and language therapist Jean Kennedy this week.

The Rotary Club of Rothesay has also contributed towards the cost of the ‘light writer’ – a device which will ‘speak’ a message typed in by its user, allowing them to communicate with others despite being unable to use their own voice.

“There’s a big push in the speech therapy field to progress devices like this,” Jean said, “because the technology available to us is so much more advanced than in the past.

“Because everyone now has smart phones, iPads and apps, there are so many more opportunities for speech and language therapists to make use of equipment which is more accessible now than ever.”

The Argyll and Bute Trust was set up to mark the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, and in the 35 years since then has given financial assistance to a range of community, educational, environmental and cultural projects throughout the area.

Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland and the Florence Nightingale Aid In Sickness Trust also contributed towards the cost of the new device.
