Chelsea Pensioners Joe Hutt and Simon De Buisseret turned many a head during the few days they spent on holiday on Bute last week.

Why? Simple, really: the bright red coats they were wearing, which tell the world that they are part of one of the most famous ex-servicemen’s organisations of all.

And their visit to Rothesay, staying with Shearings at the Glenburn Hotel, follows a busy few months of travelling all over Britain and beyond for the pair - who, in their own words, are determined to “grow old disgracefully, and have a whale of a time doing it”.

“If you want to go out somewhere you just fill in a chitty to say where you’re going, and you go,” Simon said.

“In November Joe and I went to Cardiff for the remembrance parade in the city - we were in the Rhondda Valley on the Sunday, back at Chelsea on Monday and on Tuesday we flew to Bahrain for a week.

“We’ve been to Number 10 Downing Street, to Guernsey and to Buckingham Palace. Twenty of us went to Arnhem by taxi from London recently, and the Dutch police cleared the highway for us when we came off the ferry at Hook of Holland.

“It’s a fantastic feeling - I feel very humbled by the response we get.”
