Cargo ship runs aground off Bute

A THREE thousand tonne cargo ship ran aground at the south end of Bute early on Monday morning.

The Coastal Isle was on passage from Belfast when she struck rocks at the southern tip of the island.

Clyde Coastguard received a report of a cargo vessel aground at Garroch Head just before 5am and tasked the Rothesay coastguard rescue team to investigate.

The ship, which suffered some damage to the bow as a result of the incident, was refloated on the rising tide with the help of the tug Anglegarth, which then escorted the Coastal Isle to its destination, Ocean Terminal in Greenock, without further incident.

Surveyors boarded the ship when she arrived in Greenock to assess the damage caused by the grounding; an official at Clyde Coastguard’s Greenock HQ told The Buteman there had been no report of any pollution in the surrounding area as a result of the incident.

A track of the ship’s passage on the ShipAIS.com website showed a gap of more than five hours, between 4.40am and 9.44am, in reports of her progress north through the Firth of Clyde.

The entry for 9.44am showed a significant change of course, from three or four degrees north to 61 degrees east-north-east, and a change of destination and estimated arrival time to ‘unknown’, though normal service resumes from 9.58am onwards.

The Coastal Isle, built in Rendsburg in Germany in 1991, has a gross tonnage of 3,125 and a deadweight tonnage of 2,973.

The vessel is operated by Coastal Container Line, and is a regular visitor to the Clyde on the company’s Greenock-Belfast container service.
