Caledonian MacBrayne is set to begin the rollout of free wireless internet access across its Clyde and Hebrides ferry network later this year.

A public tender for the installation of the equipment has been completed and a contract is expected to be awarded shortly, but there are not yet any detailed timescales available for specific routes and ships.

The desire for free wifi on board CalMac’s ferries gained extra impetus on Bute last month when we reported the switching-on of the facility at Wemyss Bay railway station on February 20.

A CalMac spokesperson said: “We share everyone’s frustration that we cannot progress this as quickly as we would all like but we hope that everyone will appreciate that there are significant technological challenges and costs associated with it and we have ensure that we get the best value.”
