Bute student prepares for Gardening Scotland event

A VISIT to the famous Ayr Flower Show inspired a redundant architectural technician to begin a new career, and today he is leading a student team from Scotland’s Rural College in Ayr - one member of which is from Bute!

Sara O’Donnell is part of the team led by Barry Small, from Ayr, and the group is busy planning their show garden – ‘Garden Designers Grotto’ - for the prestigious Gardening Scotland event which will be held at Ingliston in June.

Sara is currently in her third year of further education as a part-time mature student ,studying for an HND in Garden Design. She returned to education following redundancy in 2010, deciding she would like to do something she would enjoy and get satisfaction from.

The ‘Garden Designers Grotto’ the team will build is a space for thinking and inspiration. For the Gardening Scotland competition the space includes a comfortable wooden bothy, surrounded by planting selected to spark ideas in a designer about shapes, colours and textures. However the group feel their concept could be adapted by anyone needing extra ‘living’ space, far enough away from the main house to create a working environment, without the stressful commute.
