Bute sailors compete in Junior Championships

RYA Scotland (Royal Yachting Association) and their ten Sailing Development Groups held their first Junior Championships, located at different sites across Scotland, to great success earlier this month. Around 150 young sailors aged 16 and under took to the water to try their hand at racing for the first time.

Lochgoilhead Scout Centre hosted a fantastic day of racing for The Argyll and Bute Sailing Development Group.

Emma Scott from Tarbert Loch Fyne Yacht Club was the overall winner for the day and said: “I have never raced before but saw all of the sailing on the TV over the Olympics. I completed my stage four and thought I would just have a go”.

There was a tie for second place between Lucy Edwards and Ryan Wilson both from the Isle of Bute Sailing Club, and Ewan Mulholland from the same club managed to clinch third.

Alasdair Young, Sailing Development Group Coordinator for Argyll and Bute Sailing, said: “It was hugely impressive to have people coming from so far around the area to take part in the event. We had people from Craobh Haven in the north, to Rothesay and Tarbert. Everyone managed well having travelled so far. Whilst on-shore the kids had a chance to chat about the racing rules for sailing as well as the recent Olympic and Paralympic Games and what they meant to them. There was also information distributed about the RYA Scotland Class Academies which helps youngsters to take their racing to an improved level”.
