Bute’s help sought for marine survey project

A NEW project aimed at recording the changing face of British marine life has appealed to residents and community groups on Bute to contribute by helping to survey the island’s shoreline.

The Shore Thing, an initiative of the Marine Biological Association, which is funded by Scottish Natural Heritage, wants to generate records of marine wildlife through inter-tidal biological surveys at sites throughout the UK.

The project engages with community groups and students around the UK to undertake surveys of their local rocky shore, recording the distribution and abundance of 22 climate change indicators and non-native species in a simple 20-minute timed species search along a particular section of shore.

The records are then uploaded to the project website (click on the link to the right of this article to find out more), and once validated the data is made available to the wider community including scientists via the National Biodiversity Network (www.nbn.ac.uk).

Fiona Crouch from the Marine Biological Association plans to visit Scotland during the first week of June, and is keen to talk to any group on Bute that might be interested in getting involved.

Fiona can be contacted via email on ficr@mba.ac.uk or by telephone on 01752 633336.
