The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games are still almost a year away - but two Bute girls got a look inside one of the event’s main venues recently when they were invited to perform at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.
Kirsty Barrett and Carly Willcocks were among 22 Highland dancers who took part in the opening ceremony for the UCI Junior Track World Championships at the cycling arena in Parkhead.
Kirsty and Carly, who both learned to dance under local teacher Anne McIlroy, were invited to take part by Karen Baird, who has been Kirsty’s dance teacher since she moved to Glasgow last year to study at the University of the West of Scotland.
The ceremony was watched by some two thousand people at the velodrome itself, and by a worldwide audience online.
“It was streamed live on YouTube, I think to about 35 different countries,” Kirsty said, “although we didn’t realise that until we got to the venue, and we couldn’t get in touch with anyone to tell them to watch.
“I think Carly was really nervous before the start but I was just really excited - it was so good to be able to perform at an event like that.”
You can watch the girls perform at this YouTube link - the opening ceremony footage begins after 14 minutes, and is around seven minutes long.
