BUTE couple George and Myra Love have raised more than three thousand pounds for Cancer Support Scotland (Tak Tent) by taking part in a sponsored ‘zip wire’ across the River Clyde in the centre of Glasgow.

The Loves, who live in Kilchattan Bay, decided to take on the challenge after 70-year-old George was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer 18 months ago, after which Myra began attending the local Tak Tent support group.

The couple’s son set George and Myra a target of £500 – but his parents’ sense of adventure didn’t take long to capture the imagination of the wider community on Bute.

As for the zip wire itself, Myra said: “It was much more terrifying to do than I thought, and at one point I wasn’t sure I’d be able to step off the crane. “We are thrilled to be able to support Cancer Support Scotland - Tak Tent, and at the same time do something wild and crazy for ourselves.

“When George was diagnosed with cancer we felt our life as we know it would end, but instead it just changed - in some ways for the better.

“When we decided to do do the zip wire, everything went from doom and gloom to smiles and laughter. “We’d like to take this opportunity to thank the entire community of Bute for their generous support, both financial and emotional.”

The couple also singled out the Kilchattan Bay shop and post office, Kingarth Hotel, Colin Zavaroni’s cafe in Rothesay and The Buteman office, where sponsorship forms for the Loves’ challenge were filled in by a steady stream of customers.

Apple Tree Nursery, where Myra was manager until her retirement, also raised a whopping £300 for the cause by holding a ‘Bake For Love’ day – contributing to a final total of £3,000.85 from cash, cheques, JustGiving donations and Gift Aid.
