Bute army cadet Matthew Daniels helped the West Lowland Battalion of the Army Cadet Force take top honours last weekend after being graded the top team in the Scottish Brigade Military Skills competition.

Held at Barry Buddon Ranges near Dundee, the competition, open to Army Cadet Force teams from all over Scotland, tests the youngsters in a huge variety of military skills ranging from shooting to first aid, an assault course to living in the field.

Cadet Sergeant Daniels (16), from the Craigmore area of Rothesay, played a key role as the West Lowland Battalion became the first ever team from the Lowlands to win the competition, run by the 51 Scottish Brigade, since its current format took effect in 2003.

The local cadet team from all over Ayrshire, Renfrewshire, Inverclyde and Dumfries & Galloway spent numerous weekends training for the competition. They even spent their two week Annual Camp on Merseyside preparing.

The team, which was led by 18-year-old Cadet Sergeant Major Ross McCartney, from Port Glasgow, received the winner’s trophy and medals from Lieutenant Colonel Mike Hay, chief of staff of 51 Scottish Brigade.
