Bute brewery ‘won’t be neighbour nuisance’

The man behind plans for a new brewery in Rothesay says he’s confident his operation won’t cause annoyance to people living nearby.

Aidan Canavan’s Bute Brew Co business will be based in the former Bute Island Foods factory on the corner of Ladeside Street and Columshill Street, a busy residential part of the town.

Mr Canavan’s licence application for the premises seeks permission for on-sales and off-sales between 12 noon and 10pm, seven days a week.

The premises themselves are described on the application as “offering alcohol for consumption on and off the premises and offering bar meals, club meetings, recorded music, live performances, dance facilities, [and] outdoor drinking facilities”.

But Mr Canavan says he has no plans to carry out any anti-social activities, or to rival any of the town’s existing pubs, and that the application is merely intended to cover every possible eventuality.

“There might be three or four nights a year when we have a beer launch or other special event,” he told The Buteman, “but I don’t want to disturb people around me - and I also want to spend my evenings with my family.

“Planning and environmental health are satisfied that noise and smell won’t be an issue.”
