The city of Toronto will play host to Rothesay Academy pupils Bonnie Caldwell and Joshua McFadden for the next three weeks.

The two Rothesay Academy pupils chosen as the winners of a ground-breaking new science scholarship have arrived in Canada to begin their once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Bonnie Caldwell and Joshua McFadden are keeping family and friends back home up-to-date with their experience in and around Toronto on the Baird of Bute Society’s Canadian Science Scholarship via frequent blog updates.

Bonnie and Josh will spend three weeks learning about the development of pioneering new medical treatments in a programme known as ‘From Bench to Bedside’.

In their first blog post since arriving in Canada, Josh wrote: “During our stay we will be meeting many important people in the world of science and medicine. Through these meetings, tutorials and general learning experiences, we will see how an initial idea becomes something used to treat potentially thousands of people.

“We will learn how a potential medicine is researched on and tested, then is sent for review at ethics committees, is used in clinical trials and the ethics behind testing, what the pharmaceutical company can actually own and patent, then finally how the medicine is implemented in hospitals and by the bedside.”
