Best of Bute gets Radio 4 showcase

The best bits of Bute have been shown off to a listening audience of millions in the latest episode of the BBC Radio 4 series Open Country.

Presenter Helen Mark began the 30-minute programme by interviewing Shiona Lawson, a long-time visitor to the island from her home in Renfrewshire before moving here to work as the librarian at Rothesay Joint Campus, on board the ferry from Wemyss Bay.

The programme was inspired by the suggestion by Irish academic Dr Ronan Foley earlier this summer that the healing properties of the sea and clear air around Bute could be used to market the island as a designated ‘blue space’, ideal for living in as well as working.

Others interviewed during the programme were Rothesay Pavilion manager James McMillan, who gave an explanation of the origin of the term ‘Brandane’ given to those born on Bute; Phil Kirkham, owner of Picture Bute and a relatively recent arrival on the island from Lancashire; Roddy McDowell of Kayak Bute, and archaeologist Paul Duffy.
