THE owner of the long-derelict bathing station on the west side of Rothesay Bay has announced that he is putting the property on the market.

Ron MacDonald told The Buteman this week that he had instructed estate agents to put the site up for sale after being diagnosed with a chronic lung condition.

The news comes just a few weeks after Mr MacDonald - who has owned the property since 1994 - announced his hopes of converting the bathing station building into two luxury homes - one for himself and his family - alongside three ‘new build’ seafront properties on the rest of the site.

Mr MacDonald denied that his decision had been influenced by negative local reaction to his proposals - expressed most recently by the island’s two SNP councillors and election candidates, Isobel Strong and Robert Macintyre, and reported in last week’s issue.

“I have recently been diagnosed with a chronic lung condition and have now instructed agents to put the bathing station to the market for sale,” Mr MacDonald said in an email to The Buteman.

“This decision is not influenced in any way by recent or historic negativity regarding the site or myself.

“I can assure you that if my health was not the way it is, I would be confident of moving forward with a planning application - especially now that we have written correspondence from the planners informing us that they would be willing to consider an application that would enable the bathing station to be brought to life for housing.

“I just want to take things easier from now on and spend more time with my family.

“Hopefully some forward looking individual or company will purchase the site and carry out a project to give it the justice it deserves.”
