Bute resident Roger Clarke’s 36 years of service with HM Coastguard have been recognised with the presentation of one of the service’s most prestigious awards - the Chief Coastguard’s Pennant.

Roger’s service in the coastguard began at Hartland Point in Devon in 1975 and continued after he moved north to Scotland a few years later, including appointments such as sector officer on Skye, station officer in Stornoway and station officer and finally sector manager for the Clyde.

He retired from full-time coastguard work in December 2006, but on moving to Bute he enrolled as a volunteer member of the island’s coastguard rescue team, and has shared his years of experience with younger team members and the general public ever since.

Chief Coastguard Peter Dymond OBE, who presented Roger with his award, said: “The Chief Coastguard’s Pennant is awarded to people who have made a significant contribution to maritime safety in both the maritime and local community, and Roger has certainly made a significant contribution wherever he has served.”
