Approval sought to ban vehicles from Rothesay promenade
Councillors from Bute and Cowal are to be asked to approve the installation of metal bollards at either end of the Rothesay promenade. This picture shows that despite signs declaring the area to be a Pedestrian Zone, it is frequently used as an unofficial, and free, car park.
FINAL approval to install lockable bollards preventing vehicle access to the Rothesay promenade will be sought at a meeting in the town this week.
Members of the Bute and Cowal area committee of Argyll and Bute Council will be asked to approve the installation of two sets of bollards when they meet at Eaglesham House in Rothesay on Tuesday.
Approval, if it is given, will mark the final chapter in a lengthy story of attempts to limit vehicular access to an area originally intended for walking.
And while surveys of public opinion - most recently by Bute Community Council, who asked the community for its views last year - have consistently found a sizeable majority in favour of limiting access to the area to pedestrians, the move will not go down well with those who use the east end of the prom to park their cars.
The accompanying picture shows around ten cars parked on the prom on Saturday morning, though that figure is swelled during the working week by island residents who commute to work on the mainland via the Rothesay-Wemyss Bay ferry.
The council is seeking approval to install metal bollards next to the pedestrian staircase at the east end of the prom (in the centre of the picture above), and at the west end near the Children’s Corner slipway.
Keys to unlock and lower the bollards will be issued to allow access to the prom for police, ambulance, fire and coastguard personnel in the event of an emergency, and to council services for maintenance work in the area.
