‘A real need to get the place going’, says MSP

TOURISM, elderly care and the economic regeneration of Bute were the focus of a visit to the island this week by Highlands and Islands MSP Rhoda Grant.

Ms Grant, the party’s spokesperson for energy, enterprise and tourism at Holyrood, visited care homes, sheltered housing projects and local voluntary and charitable projects during her time in Rothesay.

“There’s a real need to get the place going, in particular with regard to employment and tourism,” Ms Grant told The Buteman.

There does seem to be a number of good projects which can help in this regard, for example, the Townscape Heritage Initiative will allow for training of special skills in construction, which may lead on to future employment for a number of people.

“The regeneration of the Pavilion and the seafront will help the local economy and will encourage spending within Bute.”

Ms Grant also said she would be contacting Bield Housing Association to voice her concern at the announcement last week of planned cuts to service levels at the organisation’s two sheltered housing complexes in Rothesay.
