A local contractor has won the tender to carry out exploratory work on the long-derelict former West Church in Rothesay.

But Bute Community Council was told this week that the name of the contractor could not yet be revealed because the cost of the work was still under discussion.

As reported last week, the work is aimed at giving Argyll and Bute Council, and the community, a clearer idea of how much it will cost to carry out proper repairs on the building in Argyle Street, which was last used as a church in the late 1970s and has lain empty since 1983.

The council lodged a planning application in August 2014 in preparation for demolition of the B-listed building, but the application was withdrawn after a group of local residents expressed an interest in saving some or all of the structure.
