A lunch club for elderly Bute residents is to close after the social enterprise which runs the service was unable to secure an extension of the lease on its premises.
The Golden Age lunch club will cease to exist after Bute Connections failed to reach an agreement with the Moat Community Centre Council over the lease of the lunch club’s venue, the Green Tree Cafe, part of the Moat building in the town’s Stuart Street.
David Rennie from Bute Connections said: “We’ve been trying for 18 months to get them to extend the lease but they feel the whole building would be better managed by one organisation.”
Nicola Jones, a member of the Moat Centre council, said: “Outside consultants were brought in to look at the best way forward for the Moat and said it would be best for the future of the whole building for the cafe to come back under the control of the centre.
“We would have no problem with anyone hiring the cafe from us and using it for a lunch club or anything else - the only change would be they would give the money for the hire to the Moat Centre council rather than to Bute Connections.”
