Ken Sykora film to be screened at Bute jazz festival

A film telling the fascinating life story of the late Ken Sykora - jazz guitarist, radio broadcaster, writer, chef and one-time owner of the Colintraive Hotel - is to be shown in Rothesay during this year’s Isle of Bute Jazz Festival.

Discovered at the age of 19 by Ivor Mairants and twice voted Britain’s best guitarist, Ken’s musical career was cut short by the Second World War and then by rock ‘n’ roll.

He moved into broadcasting and, in the late 1950s, inspired a generation of guitarists through his popular BBC radio programme, Guitar Club.

By the late sixties he was one of Britain’s most loved radio broadcasters. But at the peak of his popularity in the early 1970s, he suddenly and unexpectedly quit the BBC in London, moving his family to Scotland to run the Colintraive Hotel.

Featuring intimate interviews with his three children, close friends and colleagues, The Man With The Jazz Guitar will be screened at the Discovery Theatre in Rothesay on Saturday, May 4.
