Jeweller Sophie reveals Bute link to The Hobbit

Movie mania is everywhere at the moment - and we can reveal the Bute link to one of the top contenders for next month’s Academy Awards.

Sophie Lewis-Smith, daughter of island doctor Peter and his wife Janey, worked as a jeweller on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which will compete for three Oscars at February’s LA awards ceremony.

Sophie now lives in Wellington in New Zealand, near where The Hobbit was filmed - but didn’t see the finished product until a visit home to see her parents on Bute over Christmas and New Year.

“It was exciting pointing out all the things I’d made,” Sophie told The Buteman.

“It’s the first time I’d worked on a movie which made it to the big screen and as a jeweller I was very particular about how my work appeared.”

* You can read more about Sophie’s work on The Hobbit in the new issue of The Buteman - on sale from Thursday, January 24.
